That's what solace means, a comfort within sorrow. But may I ask, is that your eye? It just seems that the artist wouldn't do that, portray his own eye. What exactly is the message you are trying to convey to your audience? That the subject's heart is grey? Unfeeling perhaps?, or is just comfortable in knowing it is cold and full of sorrow? Indifferent maybe? Or am I completely wrong?
You're not wrong. As a matter of fact we are on the same exact page here. I'm glad some one understands this one.

As for the grey heart, it can be seen as being used up and exhausted. Tired of beating.
